previous 18/61 next 20/61  Moçambique 2 - 0 Eesti (282771453)

Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and Academica de Maputo saw a crowd turnout of 81744. Moçambique started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. Lineup: Morte - Romão, Aires, Maceira - Paços, Castro, Charrua, Felicíssimo, Quintal - Louceiro, Barros.

Eesti tactics involved an interesting 5-3-2 combination. They fielded: Kelder - Muna, Siniväli, Saar, Truuts, Tamm - Ülem, Smolyakov, Mets - Voevodin, Nöps.

Eesti clearly had decided to counter-attack when they could. Good work by Eesti's defensive line produced a couple of good counterattack chances, one of which cut elegantly down the middle of the pitch and found Evald Nöps alone in front of the goal, but his shot whistled just wide. 16 minutes into the game, Eesti seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a weak level of organization. With 17 minutes played, the excellent ball from the wing by Moçambique's Salustiano Quintal reached Eduardo Barros's head, and he is not one to miss such an opportunity - 1 - 0. Hallar Truuts suddenly found himself completely free on the right wing, when a counterattack by Eesti caught their opponents by surprise. Only a great save by the opposing keeper prevented him from scoring. Moçambique's Samuel Castro saw his fine effort strike the top of the bar following some good work up the middle by his teammates after 36 minutes. Rai Paços almost managed to score another goal for Moçambique, coming from the right, but his header was tipped to a corner by the visitors' keeper. 1 - 0 was the halftime score. This half belonged to Moçambique, who controlled the ball 74 percent of the time.

Eesti's coach took some time during the break to go over his strategy, which raised Eesti's organization to solid. A great save by keeper Alan Kelder after 58 minutes kept the visitors in the game after Carlos Aires struck from the left with a real cannonball. Coming in from the right, Eesti had a good opportunity to convert on a counterattack after 59 minutes, but Konstantin Smolyakov's attempt to finish was easily stopped. A counterattack by Eesti after 62 minutes could have resulted in a goal, but Konstantin Smolyakov, coming in on the left, couldn't get the shot off. With 73 minutes played, Moçambique put themselves up 2 - 0 when the visiting defenders lost the ball to Plácido Louceiro, who came up from the left and proceeded to coolly round the keeper and knock the ball home. Moçambique's Eduardo Barros wanted to play on, but 73 minutes into the game the decision was made to substitute him for André Alves. By now, Moçambique were drawing the troops back in order to defend their lead. With 77 minutes played, Plácido Louceiro could have brought this one home for Moçambique as he charged up on the left, but his hooked ball went just a bit too high. The coach of Moçambique was happy with the game so far, but still wanted to change the line up. After 89 minutes, Teodósio Pinto came on for Rai Paços. Moçambique enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 73 percent of possession.

Moçambique's best player was Jesuíno Morte. However, Plácido Louceiro made a disastrous appearance. Andrey Voevodin performed admirably for Eesti. Reimo Tamm turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 2 - 0.
